Claude Fable 5 is back. Here is what changed.
After 19 days offline, Anthropic redeployed Claude Fable 5 globally on July 1.
The backstory: three days after its June 9 launch, the US Department of Commerce issued an export-control directive requiring Anthropic to restrict access to foreign nationals. Unable to verify nationality in real time, Anthropic suspended access for all users worldwide.
The controls were lifted on June 30. Fable 5 is now available on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry to follow.
What changed in the returning model: Anthropic trained a new safety classifier targeting the specific jailbreak technique flagged by Amazon researchers. It blocks that behavior in over 99% of cases. Some routine coding and debugging requests may now fall back to Opus 4.8.
One more thing buried in the announcement: Anthropic, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are drafting a shared industry framework for scoring the severity of AI jailbreaks. The first time frontier labs have built safety infrastructure together.
The first time a frontier model launch required government sign-off before reaching global users. Probably not the last.
