After 19 days offline, Anthropic redeployed Claude Fable 5 globally on July 1.<\/p>\n
The backstory: three days after its June 9 launch, the US Department of Commerce issued an export-control directive requiring Anthropic to restrict access to foreign nationals. Unable to verify nationality in real time, Anthropic suspended access for all users worldwide.<\/p>\n
The controls were lifted on June 30. Fable 5 is now available on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry to follow.<\/p>\n
What changed in the returning model: Anthropic trained a new safety classifier targeting the specific jailbreak technique flagged by Amazon researchers. It blocks that behavior in over 99% of cases. Some routine coding and debugging requests may now fall back to Opus 4.8.<\/p>\n
One more thing buried in the announcement: Anthropic, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are drafting a shared industry framework for scoring the severity of AI jailbreaks. The first time frontier labs have built safety infrastructure together.<\/p>\n
The first time a frontier model launch required government sign-off before reaching global users. Probably not the last.<\/p>\n
